The Master of Public Health Program at Lakehead University was established in 2002, the first such program in Canada.  This practicum-based degree offers the option of completing a Specialization in Nursing, that may include Nurse Practitioner electives. 

The program is delivered using a unique blend of on-campus and distance technology:  content is delivered using the University's online distance education course management system (WebCT), and web conferencing.  Students have the opportunity to attend live, media-streamed lectures or to view archived lectures.  There is no requirement to attend on campus.  Our media-streaming helps to build relationships with faculty and foster a sense of belonging to an active and engaged graduate student community.  The degree is designed to take into consideration each student's needs, including the choice of period of study; ie, full-time or flexible full-time.

The Master of Public Health program is primarily intended to build on the knowledge foundation of persons currently working in the field of public health. The curriculum focuses on current issues in the science and/or service of public health, so that students may gain experience through opportunities in any of the fundamental disciplines that underlie public health. The program's objectives are to prepare a graduate who:

  • possesses advanced public health-related education;
  • is capable of critical analysis;
  • understands health-related decision-making at the level of the individual, population, and government;
  • understands research; and
  • possesses knowledge exchange and dissemination strategies for various audiences.
